Don wrote this song as a reaction to multiple work trips in his day job as an electronics professor in which it was always pouring rain the whole time he was wherever he had to travel to, but the sun always came out just as he was leaving. The last time, in Stuttgart, his host Dave suggested that he write a song called "The Sun Only Shines When I Leave". So he did. And after the rest of the band got hold of it, it ended up sounding a little as if Hank3 had slipped acid in his dad's beer before a gig.

In Stuttgart I was saved by my old buddy Dave
Who took me through the deluge to the jam
